IB Career-related Programme (CP): A Complete Guide

The IB Career-related Programme (CP) is the IB’s fastest-growing qualification, and for good reason. It’s a powerful, modern framework designed for students like you who have a clear career path in mind and want to blend rigorous academics with practical, real-world skills. But what exactly is it, and how does it get you into top universities?

As former IB graduates and expert tutors, we’ve seen firsthand how the CP can transform your final years of school into a launchpad for success. This guide cuts through the complexity to give you the insider knowledge you need.

By using this guide, you will be able to:

  • Understand the CP’s unique three-part structure and how each component builds a powerful university profile.
  • Master the four components of the CP Core, the "secret sauce" that sets CP graduates apart.
  • Unlock the full potential of the Reflective Project to create a standout piece of academic research.
  • Navigate the university application process with confidence, including a clear breakdown of the UK’s UCAS Tariff system for CP students.
  • Learn the strategies that top-scoring students use to create synergy across the programme and impress admissions officers.

What is the IB CP? The Three-Part Framework

Think of the CP as a flexible, custom-built programme that combines the best of the IB with hands-on learning. To earn the certificate, every student must complete three key elements.

1. Diploma Programme (DP) Courses

This is the academic backbone of your CP. You will take a minimum of two IB Diploma courses, which can be at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). These are the exact same courses, with the same exams and grading from 1 to 7, that full Diploma students take.

The Lanterna Tip: Strategic selection is everything. Top students align their DP subjects with their career goals. Aspiring engineer? Choose HL Physics and HL Maths. Future business leader? Consider HL Economics and SL French. This creates a focused narrative that admissions officers love.

2. The Career-related Study (CRS)

This is where your passion comes to life. The CRS is a practical, vocational qualification provided by an external partner and accredited by a recognized professional body. Your school helps you choose a CRS that fits your ambitions.

Popular examples include BTEC diplomas in Business or Engineering, creative arts programmes from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), or specialized tech tracks. This component gives you industry-recognized skills and a separate qualification alongside your IB certificate.

3. The CP Core

The Core is the glue that connects your academic DP courses with your practical CRS. It’s a set of four components designed to develop your personal, professional, and ethical skills. It’s what makes the CP so much more than just a collection of courses.

A Deep Dive into the CP Core

The CP Core requires a minimum of 240 hours and is what truly distinguishes the programme. It consists of four mandatory components.

(Note: The IB is updating its curriculum for students starting in August 2025. This includes rebranding "Service Learning" to "Community Engagement" and "Language Development" to "Language and Cultural Studies.")

1. Personal and Professional Skills (PPS)

This is a 90-hour taught course that prepares you for the modern workplace and university life. There’s no final exam; instead, you’re assessed internally on your development across five key areas. It’s all about building transferable skills like communication, critical thinking, and intercultural understanding.

PPS Theme What You'll Learn
Personal Development Master self-awareness, stress management, and resilience. Identify your strengths and learn how to work on your weaknesses.
Intercultural Understanding Learn to navigate diverse cultural perspectives, a crucial skill for a globalized world.
Effective Communication Practice articulating complex ideas, active listening, and digital literacy for professional settings.
Thinking Processes Develop a toolkit for problem-solving, critical analysis, and creative thinking to tackle complex challenges.
Applied Ethics Explore ethical dilemmas and professional codes of conduct, giving you the foundation for the Reflective Project.

2. Community Engagement (CE)

Formerly known as Service Learning, this 50-hour component requires you to apply your skills to a genuine community need. This isn’t just volunteering; it’s a structured process of investigation, preparation, action, and reflection. Your project should ideally link to your career path, providing you with invaluable experience and powerful stories for your university applications.

The process follows five distinct stages:

  1. Investigation: Identify a real community need.
  2. Preparation: Plan, research, and gather resources.
  3. Action: Execute your plan and collaborate with others.
  4. Reflection: Continuously evaluate your impact and assumptions.
  5. Demonstration: Share your journey and outcomes.

3. Language and Cultural Studies (LCS)

Formerly Language Development, this 50-hour component requires you to study an additional language that is not your best one. In today’s global economy, this is non-negotiable. The delivery is flexible: you might take a formal language class, use an online platform, or take lessons tailored to your CRS (for example, learning culinary terms in French). You’ll build a portfolio to document your progress.

4. The Reflective Project (RP)

This is the capstone of the CP Core and your chance to shine. The RP is a 50-hour independent research project on an ethical dilemma arising from your Career-related Study. It’s the only Core component that is externally moderated by the IB, and it’s fantastic preparation for university-level research.

The Reflective Project: Your University Application Superpower

A great Reflective Project can be the centrepiece of your university application. Here’s how to nail it.

Choose an Ethical Dilemma, Not Just an Issue

This is the most common mistake students make. An "issue" is a broad topic (like AI in the workplace). An "ethical dilemma" is a specific situation with a conflict between two or more moral principles, where there is no easy answer.

  • Weak Topic: The problems with fast fashion.
  • Strong Ethical Dilemma: Is it ethically justifiable for multinational fast-fashion corporations to utilize unpaid internships in developing economies to maximize shareholder profit?

Pick Your Format

You have two options for presenting your research.

RP Format Specifications
Option 1: The Extended Essay A traditional academic essay of up to 3,000 words. Perfect for those who love deep, structured writing.
Option 2: The Multimedia / Combined Format A shorter essay (1,500-2,000 words) plus a creative piece, like a 7-minute short film, an audio interview, or a presentation.
Examiner's Warning: If you choose Option 2, the two parts must complement each other, not repeat the same information. Use the creative piece to show something the essay can’t, like the human experience behind the dilemma.

Use Strong Ethical Frameworks

To get top marks, you need to go beyond personal opinion. Analyse your dilemma using established ethical theories. Mentioning frameworks like Utilitarianism (the greatest good for the greatest number) or Deontology (duty-based ethics) will show examiners you are thinking at a higher level.

How It’s All Assessed: Grades and Passing Conditions

The CP uses a mix of assessment styles, but the Reflective Project has a formal grading structure that is key to your success.

Reflective Project Assessment Criteria (A-E)

The RP is marked out of 36 points and graded from A to E. Criterion C is worth the most marks.

Criterion Focus Max Marks How to Get Top Marks
A: Focus and Method The dilemma and your research plan 6 Your research question is razor-sharp and clearly linked to your CRS. You use a variety of sources and evaluate their bias.
B: Knowledge and Understanding Context and different viewpoints 9 You show a deep understanding of the issue, exploring multiple perspectives (e.g., cultural, professional) with nuance.
C: Critical Thinking Analysis and argumentation 12 This is the big one. You apply ethical frameworks, build a logical argument, and develop a well-reasoned conclusion.
D: Communication Structure and formatting 3 Your project is clear, well-structured, and perfectly formatted with consistent citations. Easy marks to win or lose.
E: Engagement and Reflection Your planning and progress form (RPPF) 6 Assessed entirely on your 1,000-word RPPF. You reflect deeply on your journey, including challenges and how you overcame them.

To be awarded the IB CP Certificate, you must:

  • Achieve a grade 3 or higher in at least two DP subjects.
  • Successfully complete all requirements for your Career-related Study.
  • Achieve a grade D or higher on the Reflective Project.
  • Satisfactorily complete all requirements for PPS, Community Engagement, and Language and Cultural Studies.
  • Have no record of academic misconduct.

Getting into University with the CP

The CP is highly respected by universities worldwide because it produces mature, skilled, and focused applicants. Here’s how to translate your achievements into a winning application.

For UK Applicants: Decoding the UCAS Tariff

Many UK universities use the UCAS Tariff to make offers. A common mistake is thinking the CP gets a single score. It doesn’t. You calculate your total by adding up the points for each individual component.

UCAS Conversion Tables

Higher Level subjects are worth significantly more than Standard Level subjects.

IB Grade Higher Level (HL) UCAS Points Standard Level (SL) UCAS Points
7 56 28
6 48 24
5 32 16
4 24 12
3 12 6

The Reflective Project also carries its own points. An A is typically worth 12 UCAS points. Your CRS qualification (e.g., BTEC) has its own separate UCAS point value.

Worked Example:

A student applying for Business (offer: 112 points) achieves:

  • HL Business Management (Grade 5): 32 points
  • SL English A (Grade 6): 24 points
  • BTEC in Business (Distinction): 56 points
  • Reflective Project (Grade B): 10 points
  • Total: 32 + 24 + 56 + 10 = 122 UCAS Points. They comfortably meet the offer.

Important Note: Top-tier universities (like Oxford, Cambridge, and most Russell Group) rarely use the Tariff. They make direct grade offers, such as "Distinction in BTEC Engineering and 6, 6 in HL Maths and HL Physics." You must have the specific subject prerequisites.

For North American Applicants: Holistic Review

US and Canadian universities love CP students. They don’t use a points system but instead look at your whole profile.

  • DP Courses: Show academic rigour. High HL scores can earn you college credit.
  • CP Core: This is your differentiator. Your Community Engagement portfolio demonstrates leadership and commitment. Your Reflective Project provides incredible material for your application essays (like the Common App essay), allowing you to discuss complex ethical issues with a depth other applicants can’t match.

The Lanterna Edge: What Top CP Students Do Differently

  1. They Create Synergy. Average students treat the CP components as separate boxes to tick. Top students weave them together. They choose an RP topic from their CRS, analyse it with theories from their DP classes, and connect it to their Community Engagement project. This creates a powerful, cohesive story for universities.
  2. They Master Reflection. Don’t treat the RPPF (Reflective Project Planning and Progress Form) as a last-minute chore. Top students use it to document their intellectual journey. Instead of "First I did this," they write, "My initial research challenged my assumptions, forcing me to reconsider my ethical framework." This critical self-awareness is exactly what examiners and admissions officers want to see.
  3. They Use Primary Data. A good RP can be written with online sources. An exceptional one almost always includes primary research. Interview a local professional, run a survey, or conduct an observation. This demonstrates incredible initiative and elevates your analysis from summarizing information to generating new insights.
  4. They Leverage Their Portfolios. Don’t just mention your work; use it. In a university interview, you can talk specifically about the ethical dilemmas in your RP or show evidence from your Community Engagement portfolio. This proves you have the real-world experience and communication skills to succeed.
