Mid-Exam Boost: Reset, Refocus, Recharge

Written by Manmohini Tiwari

Take a deep breath.
I’ve had a lot of students reach out to me expressing their anxiety and sense of overwhelming worry overtake them. This is completely understandable. You’re halfway through one of the most intense academic challenges out there, and that alone is a victory. Exams can feel like a whirlwind, but this is your reminder that you are not your results—you are so much more.

Here are some quick tips I’d like to stay grounded and focused in the days ahead:

1. Prioritize Rest Like It’s Homework

Your brain needs sleep to store what you’ve studied. Even a 20-minute nap can reset your focus. Avoid all-nighters—your future self will thank you. Try using the Pomodoro Technique or setting focused timers in order to ensure balance.

2. Break the Cram Cycle

Study in focused 45–50 minute sessions, then take a 10-minute break. Stretch, walk, drink water. This boosts retention and reduces burnout.

3. Eat to Fuel, Not Just to Survive

Go for foods that boost brain power—nuts, fruits, dark chocolate (yes!), and lots of water. Avoid too much caffeine; energy from rest is more sustainable for you in the long term.

4. Don’t Forget to Breathe- Try Calming Practices!

Both, metaphorically and literally. Try a 2-minute breathing exercise when you’re anxious. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. It’s called box breathing and it works wonders.

If you’ve ever wanted to try meditation; now is the time! I’m a regular mediator now and it is my safe space! I was hosting a seminar and a ten year old boy, Gabriele, said, “If you’re happy and calm, you tend to perform better because you will enjoy the work.” This is key to success. I recommend reflecting on this and trying to apply it to your life!

Here are some calming guided meditations and visualizations/music that can help:

You can also try downloading the Ananda App which has guided visualizations and breathing techniques.

5. Keep Perspective and Adjust Goals

These exams matter, but they don’t define your worth or future. Growth, resilience, and self-care are lifelong superpowers—and you’re practicing all of them right now. Positive affirmations really help; “I am going to ace this exam!”, “I will give it my best”. If you’re feeling strong try even: “I will enjoy this exam!”.

Keep showing up for yourself, one moment, one paper, one deep breath at a time.

You’re not alone—there are tens of thousands of students feeling the same way.

Stay positive and best of luck!
