The ESS Syllabus, Broken Down
An interdisciplinary course linking ecosystems, resources and society. Here's the new syllabus, and where students focus.
Environmental Systems & Societies was redeveloped for first teaching in 2024, with first examinations in May 2026, and is now offered at HL as well as SL, the IB's first interdisciplinary subject available at Higher Level. Structured around perspectives, systems and sustainability, it bridges the sciences and individuals-and-societies. The current 2025 results reflect the outgoing SL course; new SL and HL exams begin in 2026.

Difference between SL and HL
From 2024, ESS is offered at HL as well as SL, the IB's first interdisciplinary HL subject (first HL exams 2026). HL adds an environmental-law, economics and ethics lens. We coach the new syllabus at both levels.
