The IB Student's Guide to Dutch Universities: Mastering Studielink & Numerus Fixus

Thinking about studying in the Netherlands? You're making a great choice. Dutch universities are world-class, packed with English-taught programs, and they really value the skills you've built in the IB Diploma Programme. Also, dutch cities are some of the most student-friendly in Europe! But, the application process has its own quirks, like a central portal called Studielink and a competitive entry system known as "Numerus Fixus".

Don't worry, we've got you covered. This guide will walk you through exactly how to navigate the system, from your first click on Studielink to accepting your offer.

Part 1: The IB Advantage in the Netherlands

It’s not just about the scenic canals, great bike lanes, and welcoming culture. The Dutch higher education system is practically tailor-made for IB students. Here's why you have an edge:

  • Your IB Diploma is Your Golden Ticket: Dutch universities recognise the IB Diploma as equivalent to their own VWO (pre-university) diploma. This streamlines your entry requirements significantly.
  • Skip the English Test: If you completed your IB Diploma in English, most universities will waive the need for a separate IELTS or TOEFL test. That's one less thing to stress about!
  • A Familiar Learning Style: The Dutch emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and group work will feel very similar to your TOK, EE, and IAs. You're already trained to think and work this way.
  • Huge Post-Study Opportunities: The Netherlands offers an "Orientation Year" visa, giving you a full year after graduation to find a job in their robust, English-speaking market.
Important Local Tip: Start researching accommodation early. There are some great options, but places are limited and in high demand!

Part 2: Navigating Studielink – Your Application Hub

Studielink is the central online portal for applying to almost every program in the Netherlands. Think of it as the Dutch version of UCAS or the Common App. You can apply for up to four programs at once (two of which can be Numerus Fixus) through this system. Here's how to tackle it:

  1. Create Your Account (Early!): Head to the Studielink website. As an international student, you'll create an account without a DigiD (that's for Dutch residents). You'll need a clear scan of your passport or ID, so have it ready.
  2. Fill in Your Details: Carefully enter your personal and educational history. Make sure your name matches your passport *exactly* to avoid any issues later.
  3. Select Your Programs: Choose your university and desired course. Remember, you can select up to four, but there are restrictions for competitive programs.
  4. Check for the Follow-Up Email: This is critical! After you register on Studielink, the university will email you a link to their *own* application portal. You must complete both. This is where you'll upload your motivation letter, CV, and other supporting documents.
  5. Manage Your To-Do List: Keep checking your Studielink dashboard. It will tell you exactly what actions you need to take to finalise your application and enrollment.
The Lanterna Tip: Always double-check the specific subject requirements for your chosen course. Many STEM or Economics programs will require specific subjects like Physics or Maths at Higher Level.

Part 3: Decoding "Numerus Fixus" – The Competitive Courses

"Numerus Fixus" is Latin for "fixed number". It’s a selection process for highly popular degrees where demand is higher than the number of available spots. If you're aiming for a course like Medicine, Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, or International Business Administration, you need to pay close attention to this.

For these programs, simply meeting the minimum IB points won't be enough. The university runs its own "decentralised selection" process which can include online assessments, entrance exams, interviews, lotteries, or a detailed review of your motivation and academic record.

Numerus Fixus vs. Standard Application: The Key Differences

FeatureNumerus Fixus ProgramsStandard Programs
Application DeadlineJanuary 15th (No exceptions!)Typically April 1st or May 1st
Number of ApplicationsMax 2 per year (and only 1 for fields like Medicine/Dentistry)Up to 4 in total via Studielink
Selection ProcessCompetitive selection via exams, interviews, grades, etc.Based on meeting the minimum entry requirements
Outcome DateYou get a ranking number on April 15th via StudielinkRolling offers, usually a few weeks after applying
Acceptance WindowYou have two weeks to accept your offer via StudielinkVaries, but generally more flexible

Part 4: Your IB-to-Netherlands Action Plan & Checklist

Feeling overwhelmed? Let's break it down into a simple timeline. Use this checklist to stay on track from DP1 right through to your offer.

TimeframeKey ActionsDone?
Spring (DP1)Research universities and courses. Crucially, check the specific IB subject requirements (e.g., Math HL for Economics). Begin to look at accommodation options.
October 1st (DP2)Applications open! Create your Studielink account. This is the official start of the application season.
October - December (DP2)Work on your applications. Draft motivation letters, update your CV, and complete any tasks in the university's portal.
January 15th (DP2)HARD DEADLINE for all Numerus Fixus program applications. Submit everything a few days early to avoid technical issues.
April 1st / May 1st (DP2)General deadline for most non-Numerus Fixus programs (check your specific course!).
April 15th (DP2)Numerus Fixus ranking numbers are released on Studielink. If you get an offer, your two-week countdown to accept begins.
May - July (DP2)Receive offers for standard programs. Submit your final IB results to the university. Finalise housing and visa arrangements.

Applying to the Netherlands is a fantastic and achievable goal for any IB student. The key is understanding the process and staying organised. By starting early and paying close attention to deadlines, you put yourself in the strongest possible position to succeed.
