“Tis the season to be jolly!” Indeed these words can sound like a distant dream for IBDP students in general, but especially if you are in DP1 — midway through this incredibly crazy journey. The holiday season offers a chance to recharge while preparing for upcoming mock exams. Striking the right balance between study and self-care is crucial for both your academic performance and overall well-being. Remember if you make more conscious choices that align with your values, you will be able to retain better results, while being happy! Here’s how to make the most of this valuable time while spending time with your loved ones:
1. Plan Strategically, Not Rigidly
Using Google Calendar or other organizational apps such as Trello, Todoist, Evernote can make your winter break productive without feeling overwhelming. Divide your days into manageable chunks, allocating time for study, relaxation, and hobbies, such as Christmas baking with your grandparents!
- Prioritize Key Subjects: Focus on subjects or topics where you need the most improvement. Review your recent assessments and teacher feedback to pinpoint areas to target.
- Set SMART Goals: Ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, “Finish reviewing all Economics notes for Chapter 2-6 along with some past paper questions for Paper 1 by December 20th” is clearer and more achievable than “Study Biology.”
- Incorporate Flexibility: Allow some room for adjustments as there are times where we must all learn to adapt to ongoing changes and circumstances. Learn to go with the flow, as one might say!
2. Optimisation versus “Maximisation”
Efficient study habits are more impactful than long hours of mundane memorization.
- Active Recall and Spaced Repetition: Use flashcards, annotation, quizzes, or apps like Anki to regularly test your understanding. This technique helps retain information better than passive rereading. Teaching concepts to others is another good study strategy!
- Practice Past Papers: Familiarize yourself with exam formats and timing. Aim to simulate test conditions to build confidence.
- Identify what learning style suits you best: https://arden.ac.uk/what-type-learner-are-you
Understanding your learning style can help you identify what study methods work best for you!
3. Nourish Your Mind, Body and Soul!
Remember self-care is not a luxury but rather a necessity.
- Sleep Well: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep per night. A consistent sleep schedule boosts memory and concentration.
- Stay Active and Eat Healthy: Incorporate physical activity like yoga, jogs, or a quick workout. Exercise reduces stress and improves focus. Fuel your body with nutritious meals and snacks.
- Mindfulness: Whether it’s breathing exercises, concentration techniques, journaling or meditation, positive small habits help you in the long-run.
Reflect and Reset: A Balanced Break Leads to Better Results
By planning effectively and prioritizing self-care, you can make your winter break both productive and rejuvenating. Remember, academic success isn’t just about how hard you work—it’s about working smart and taking care of yourself along the way. Remember Christmas is a time of giving and sharing, so remember to spend time with your family and loved ones, but most importantly, give yourself love, pauses, and time to balance.
Use your time wisely, and best of luck in your mock exams, you’ve got this!
Best of luck!
