The IB English IO: An Overview

The Individual Oral is a huge part of your final IB English A grade (20% for HL, 30% for SL). It's a 15-minute oral exam, split into two parts: a 10-minute presentation from you, followed by a 5-minute Q&A with your teacher.

Your task is to examine how a chosen global issue is presented in two texts you've studied. For Lang & Lit, that's one literary work and one non-literary body of work. For Lit, it's two literary works (one in translation). You'll use specific extracts (max 40 lines each) as a launchpad for your wider analysis.

The IO is marked out of 40, using four criteria:

  • Criterion A: Knowledge, Understanding, and Interpretation – How well you know your texts and the global issue.
  • Criterion B: Analysis and Evaluation – How well you analyze the author's choices and their effects.
  • Criterion C: Focus and Organization – The clarity and structure of your presentation.
  • Criterion D: Language – The clarity, accuracy, and academic tone of your language.

The Power of Preparation: Your Planning Framework

The Lanterna Tip: Forget memorizing a full script word-for-word. That's a recipe for disaster under pressure. The key to a polished IO is robust planning, which allows you to be natural and confident. You can bring a 10-bullet-point outline into the exam, and that's what we'll build.
  1. Deconstruct the Prompt: Always keep the core task in mind: "Examine the ways in which the global issue of your choice is presented through the content and form of..." Everything you say must connect back to this.
  2. Global Issue Deep Dive: Clearly define your global issue. Why is it significant globally? How is it transnational? Form a sharp thesis statement that makes an argument about how your texts tackle this issue.
  3. Text Selection & Justification: For each text, briefly state its title, author, and text type. Explain why these specific extracts are perfect for exploring your global issue.
  4. Extract-Specific Analysis (for each text):
    • Context: Briefly place the extract within the wider work.
    • Argument & Evidence: What's your main point here? Back it up with a short, powerful quote.
    • Analysis of Authorial Choices: This is crucial. Don't just summarize. Analyze how the author uses literary or rhetorical features (imagery, metaphor, tone, structure, rhetorical appeals) to make their point about the global issue.
    • Link Back: Explicitly connect your analysis back to your overarching global issue and the work as a whole.
  5. Synthesize & Conclude: Reiterate your thesis in a new way and summarize the key insights from both texts. End with a final thought on the relevance of your global issue.

Unlocking Global Issues: The Tracker

Your global issue is the backbone of your IO. It needs to be specific enough to allow for deep analysis. Vague issues lead to vague analysis. Use this tracker to brainstorm and refine your ideas.

Potential Global Issue (Broad) Refined & Specific Global Issue Text 1 Text 2 Why it's a "Good Fit"
Example: Gender Inequality The societal pressures placed upon women regarding their domestic roles and career aspirations. A Doll's House (Ibsen) 1950s Good Housewife Ad Both texts explicitly portray restrictive gender roles. Ibsen uses dramatic irony to critique them, while the ad uses visual rhetoric to reinforce them.

Your Global Issue Must Be:

  • Significant: It matters on a global scale.
  • Transnational: It crosses borders and cultures.
  • Specific: It's focused enough for deep analysis, not just a broad topic.
  • Rich in Authorial Choice: It lets you analyze how authors present the issue, not just what they say.

Structuring for Success: Your 10-Point Outline

Your 10-minute presentation needs a clear, logical flow. Think of it as a verbal essay. Here’s a tried-and-tested structure to build your 10 bullet points around.

Part 1: Intro (1 min)

  • Global Issue & Definition
  • Introduce Texts & Thesis

Part 2: Text 1 (4 mins)

  • Context of Extract
  • Point 1 + Evidence/Analysis
  • Point 2 + Evidence/Analysis
  • Link to Wider Work

Part 3: Text 2 (4 mins)

  • Context of Extract
  • Point 1 + Evidence/Analysis
  • Point 2 + Evidence/Analysis
  • Link to Wider Work

Part 4: Conclusion (1 min)

  • Restate Thesis
  • Synthesize Insights & Final Thought

Insider Tips from an IB Graduate

Having been through the IO myself, here's what truly makes a difference:

  • Practice Out Loud: Record yourself. Listen back. Is your pacing good? Do you sound natural, or are you just reading? Time yourself ruthlessly.
  • Master the Q&A: The 5-minute Q&A is your chance to shine. Anticipate questions and prepare extra points of analysis from the wider works. Always link your answers back to the global issue.
  • Analyse, Don't Summarize: The examiner wants your analysis of the author's choices, not a plot summary. Focus on the "how" and "why."
  • Confidence is Key: Even if you stumble, recover gracefully. Your confidence in your ideas and preparation will shine through.
