IB Core Points Matrix Explained 2026: Unlock Your Bonus Points!

Navigating the IB Diploma can feel like solving a complex puzzle. Among the most crucial, yet often misunderstood, pieces are the coveted "core points" from your Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). These aren't just extras; they can be the decisive factor in securing your university offer or achieving your dream IB score.

This guide is designed to demystify the IB Core Points Matrix for both students and parents. We'll show you exactly how your TOK and EE grades combine to unlock those vital bonus points, making sure you're set up to maximise your potential.

By using this guide, you will be able to:

  • Deconstruct the IB Core: Understand the purpose and structure of the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).
  • Master the Core Points Matrix: Clearly see how your EE and TOK grades (A-E) translate into 0-3 bonus points for your overall diploma score.
  • Identify Critical Grade Combinations: Learn which grade pairings yield maximum points and, crucially, which combinations to avoid to ensure you get your diploma.
  • Strategise for Success: Gain actionable tips on how to excel in both your EE and TOK, boosting your chances of securing those valuable bonus points.

Understanding the IB Diploma Core: More Than Just Subjects

The IB Diploma is a holistic journey, and its "core" elements are central to this philosophy. Alongside your six academic subjects, you must complete three core components: the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). While CAS is a mandatory pass/fail component, your EE and TOK are graded and collectively contribute up to 3 bonus points to your final IB Diploma score.

These 3 points are added to the maximum 42 points from your six subjects, making a perfect IB score 45 points. They represent a huge opportunity to show off your research skills, critical thinking, and reflective learning – qualities that universities absolutely love.

The IB Core Points Matrix Explained

Your performance in the EE and TOK is individually graded on a letter scale from A (highest) to E (lowest). The IB then uses a specific matrix to combine these two grades and determine how many bonus points you get.

Here’s the breakdown:

Extended Essay (EE) Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Bonus Points Awarded
A A 3
A B 3
B A 3
A C 2
C A 2
B B 2
B C 2
C B 2
A D 1
D A 1
B D 1
D B 1
C C 1
C D 1
D C 1
D D 0
E Any Grade Failing Condition
Any Grade E Failing Condition
Essentially, if you're going for the full 3 core points, you need at least a B and an A.
The Critical "No Diploma" Condition: Pay close attention to the bottom of the matrix. Receiving an 'E' grade in either your Extended Essay or your Theory of Knowledge results in a failing condition. You will not be awarded the IB Diploma, no matter how high your subject scores are. This is non-negotiable, so make sure you give both components the attention they deserve.

Demystifying the Core Components

To strategise effectively, let's quickly break down what each component actually is and what the examiners are looking for.

The Extended Essay (EE)

The EE is your chance to be a mini-expert. It's an independent, 4,000-word research paper on a topic you choose within an IB subject. This is where you can really geek out on something you find interesting, developing university-level research and writing skills along the way.

Key Assessment Criteria (30 marks total):

  • Criterion A: Framework (6 marks): A sharp research question and a method and structure to suit.
  • Criterion B: Knowledge and understanding (6 marks): Using the right subject-specific content and context.
  • Criterion C: Analysis and line of argument (6 marks): Using good research to build quality of argument.
  • Criterion D: Discussion and evaluation (8 marks): Evaluating your findings, sources, and the process.
  • Criterion E: Reflection (4 marks): Reflection on the research process is crucial, with mandated RPF (Reflection on Planning and Progress Form) instead of the old RPPF, completed at the end of the process.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

TOK is the "meta" part of the IB. It's a course that makes you step back and think about knowledge itself – how do we know what we claim to know? It's all about questioning assumptions and exploring different perspectives across your subjects.

TOK is assessed in two parts:

  1. The TOK Exhibition: You choose three real-world objects and connect them to a TOK prompt, explaining how knowledge manifests in your world. This is worth 1/3 of your grade.
  2. The TOK Essay: A 1,600-word essay on one of six prescribed titles. This is externally marked and is worth 2/3 of your grade. The entire assessment is based on a holistic rubric rather than criteria.

Insider Strategies to Maximise Your Core Points

As an IB Coordinator, I've seen what works and what doesn't. Here are our top tips to lock in those bonus points:

  1. Start Early, Stay Organised: You'll thank yourself for starting early in DP1 as both the EE and TOK are marathons, not sprints. Procrastination is your enemy. Break down the big tasks into smaller chunks and set yourself mini-deadlines.
  2. Choose Your EE Topic Wisely: Pick something you are genuinely curious about (in a HL subject preferably). You'll be spending a lot of time with this topic, so your personal interest will help get you through the tough parts.
  3. Hone Your Research Question: A focused, arguable research question is the absolute backbone of your EE so discuss this properly with your supervisor. For your TOK essay, make sure you fully understand what the prescribed title is asking before you start writing.
  4. Embrace Critical Thinking: This is where you earn the higher marks. For the EE, don't just list facts – analyse, evaluate, and build an argument. For TOK, explore nuance in competing claims, and explore the real-world implications of your arguments.
  5. Use Your Supervisor: Your teachers are there to help you. Schedule regular check-ins, share your drafts, and actually listen to their feedback.
  6. Master the Boring Stuff: For the EE and TOK components, get your citations (including any images or charts), formatting, and word count organised early.
  7. Know the Rubrics: Read the official IB assessment criteria. Understanding exactly what the examiner is looking for is like having a road map.
  8. Don't Neglect One for the Other: Remember the 'E' grade failing condition. Even if you're aiming for an A in your EE, make sure your TOK is solid. Aiming for a B/C combination is a smart strategy to safely secure at least 2 points.

Your Path to IB Success

The IB Core Points Matrix might seem intimidating at first, but it's really just a clear system to reward your hard work and intellectual curiosity. By understanding how the grades combine and by applying a smart strategy to both your EE and TOK, you can give your final IB score a significant boost.

Focus on quality, think critically, and those bonus points are yours!
