What Is the IB Diploma Programme?

The (IBDP) is a two-year programme recognised by universities worldwide for its academic rigour, holistic approach, and emphasis on developing internationally minded, curious, and capable young adults. You chose it because it cultivates “well-rounded individuals ready to take on the complexities of our interconnected world.


Why You chose the IB Diploma

The IBDP is much more than an academic programme.  This is important to remember!
It encourages students to become:

  • Independent thinkers and learners
  • Effective communicators
  • Culturally aware global citizens
  • Balanced, reflective individuals

Students study subjects across six groups for the two years, plus three core components that promote critical thinking, research, and personal growth. 


The IBDP Subject Groups

Students select six subjects—one from each group below (though substitutions are possible). Three subjects are studied at Higher Level (HL), and three at Standard Level (SL).

  1. Studies in Language and Literature 
  2. Language Acquisition 
  3. Individuals and Societies 
  4. Sciences 
  5. Mathematics
  6. The Arts – or an additional subject from groups 1–4

The IB offers 50 subjects to authorised schools. Which subjects are offered in these groups is determined by the school, and will reflect their students’ interests and what they want to study after the IBDP.

The Core Components

The core is what makes the IBDP distinctive. It supports personal and academic development and is compulsory for all students:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK):
    A critical thinking course in which students learn to question knowledge and to question assumptions. Really vital in the world of news, news, news! 
  • Extended Essay (EE):
    A 4,000-word independent research project on a topic of the student’s choice. It builds essential skills for university study.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS):
    Students take part in a range of non-academic experiences, from creative pursuits and physical activity to volunteering. Through CAS students actively contribute to, and make a difference in, their community. CAS promotes balance and encourages personal growth.

Assessment and Grading

Each subject is marked out of 7 points, with a maximum of 42 points across six subjects. Up to 3 additional points are awarded for the combined performance in TOK and the EE, making a maximum possible score of 45.

Only the IA completed during the two years and the examinations taken toward the end of Year 2 are used by the IB to determine IB grades and award. Assessment in school is not a contributor.

To earn the diploma, students must meet requirements such as completing all components, achieving at least 24 points, and meeting minimum standards in core areas. You can read more here.


What Can You as an IBDP Parent Expect?


Challenge and Support:
The IB is demanding. Expect the student to manage deadlines, balance coursework, and be challenged to think deeply. They will be well supported by experienced teachers and coordinator, and of course you. Download pdf for more detailed info.

How You Can Support Your Student on Their IBDP Journey

Stay engaged with the school – the school will want you to be a partner in your student’s learning success.

Attend IBDP information sessions offered by your school – these are intended to make you an informed IBDP parent, and thus a better support to your student.

Follow school expectations – pay special attention to attendance, the IBDP Internal Assessment calendar, expectations on academic honesty . . .
